How To Choose The Best Shorts For Summer

The ultimate summer uniform of any fashion conscious man has to include shorts. Even despite the predictable British weather, come hail, rain or shine, shorts have earned a place in every man’s wardrobe, regardless if you shop at Armani or Zegna.  Getting the ´right´ look can be tricky also, with a never ending range of options in casual and smart available. Once spring comes around, everyone needs to splash out on a pair of shorts. Whether it’s a pair of chino shorts that can be smartened up and worn to work, or a simple pair of trunks for relaxing by the pool, this comprehensive selection will have you covered.

Chino Shorts

Chino shorts are probably the most common and flexible summer apparel choice. They are a great option if you’re looking for a versatile piece that can be worn throughout the warmer months regardless of the occasion. Available in every colour going, there are options for every man; from the loud and proud to the classic and timeless. You can also use them as part of a capsule wardrobe and jazz them up with an oxford shirt and a pair of loafers for more formal events, or dress them down with flip flops and a t-shirt for the afternoon beer garden days.

Denim

Denim is again, a very popular choice for these summer staples. They can help to give you a somewhat classic style that is current year after year. Although the style commandments of denim put it in a more informal / casual setting, you can still match them up with a crisp button down shirt and a pair of slip on shoes. The very nature of denim fabric also, alongside colour ways, tones and finishes means you can easily select different options and styles to see you through the entire summer (just make sure you keep these just above the knee level to avoid a flashback to 90´s kids TV).

Patterned

For the more ´braver´ man who wants to see and be seen, there are a whole range of patterned shorts available to make you make a statement – from the good to the bad (and the ugly). Examples such as cross patterned types can add that sartorial spark without straining your eyes. For the more fashion forward gent, full frontal colour ways in bold / acidic colours will give you sense of place if you plan to hit the beach in Ibiza (just make sure the rest of your outfit is basic to avoid any serious clashes.

Trunks

If to you, summer means down-time by the pool, then a good pair of trunks is a solid investment. Available in every colour and pattern known to man, time served favourites such as tropical prints can help you look distinguished (in all the right ways). You can also pair these flip flops for the beach or hi-tops for the after beach drink sessions. More classical versions such as polka dots and subtle checks can give you a seriously stylish laid back look if you want to make things a little more formal.

How to Style them Smart

If you’ve selected a pair of chino shorts, then deck shoes / loafers are a great way to keep your style smart. A tough pair from a brand like Zaks will be sure to serve you the whole summer (even if you’re wearing them on a daily basis). If you want to turn things up with some every day stylish footwear, then a pair of classic slip-ons will keep things casual whilst still accommodating you to look well turned out. A crisp short sleeved button down shirt is your best bet for more classic summer wear, (and a linen jacket can be worn once the evening temperature drops).

Casual

Denim shorts are best styled with a pair of trainers for an everyday look and what better way to keep your look classic than with a pair of Chuck Berry´s? They’re guaranteed to keep you comfortable all day and come in a full assortment of colours (so if you are intimidated by the difficulty of keeping white trainers clean then don´t panic). Deck shoes are also a good option to take your look over to the more refined evening if you want to add a hint of sophistication. These looks can be finished off with a simple t-shirt and maybe a bucket hat.

Beach Vibes

Tropical prints can be paired with a classic pair of Havaiana’s for a day of lounging around the beach sipping on cocktails. If you fancy showcasing your trunks in a more urban setting, then some woven slip-ons will give you a welcome contrast ( colour depending). Just remember, if you do leave the beach, it´s best not to walk around without a top (no matter how ripped you are) so a vest is a great way to discreetly show your definition and carry on those summer vibes. This look works great with a coordinating backpack (which can also have stronger print).

Street Style

For the summer months, boots may not be the first type of footwear that jumps to mind when styling shorts, but if you choose the right pair then you can safely pull this look off. If you plan to wear shorts at mid-thigh length, then a pair of cult boots from Dr Martens can be worn (carefully and with some rolled down socks, which should not go any higher than the top of the boot.) Again, this look can be flawlessly paired with a contrasting button down shirt and a rattan backpack.

If you fancy a payday splash out, then grab yourself a couple of options from the types above. Just remember to mix and match the colours and patterns to keep your style fresh all summer.
